About Me

Rachel Svendsen is a poet and writer from Milford, PA where she lives with her husband and daughters. She is a stay-at-home mom slowly working towards her BA in English. Her short story, “Filling the Silence,” received an honorable mention in the 2019 Story Embers short story competition.

She is a voracious reader, enjoying many genres. Her love of reading began at ten years old when she first read Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre. Some of her favorite authors include: Neil Gaiman, C. S. Lewis, Bill Bryson, and P.G. Wodehouse.

She started writing poems and short stories in Middle School, as well as a few dramatic diary entries. She wrote two cheesy novellas in 6th grade (which have mysteriously disappeared). She is currently revising three completed novels and has five other manuscripts queued up behind them.

This blog is a mixture of books, poems, and reflections on her life and journey as a writer.

You are such an inspiration, as I’m on a journey of discovery all there is to know about writing. I love your short stories and flash fiction, and poetry.

  4. Dear Rachel…your showing up over at Grace Notes has been a real blessing, and even more when you like my poems, particularly the really honest ones about the struggles I have being in this “Body that Thou Hast Prepared me”…and the unique challenges and opportunities to discover what exactly Psalms 139 means in light of dysphoria, well crud, aren’t we all, we fallen, a bit dysphoric, spiritually speaking?

Anyway…it really has been a balm to me…cus judgement. Usually openly christian people are also openly judgemental of transgender people…they simply will not let themselves discover the person I truly am, inside this thing I am in.

And somehow, your stopping by is a bit like the cool girl noticing the ugly duckling! Sere! God, your writing is so good, and you are so young and pretty and seemingly fitting inside yourself so perfectly, like why in the world would you even bother with the likes of me?

And yet you have…and while it is a bit flattering that you like anything of mine, it is particularly touching that you would like the drivel I just wrote like “shrieking” and “Nothing But Trash”.

Thank you for trusting me in my attempts to be honest before God and before Humans…like David. May that gesture of yours, so graceful and grace giving return to you many blessings…and may you be richly rewarded for your cup of cold water to Jesus, for you have been one to me, and I am among the least if not the least of these.

I am crying right now…and asking Mama (whoops, “the” Holy Spirit) to take those tears and make them into spiritual pearls to adorn your beautiful heart. Richest blessings to you as you bloom and grow and bear fruit…maybe you can be extra beautiful, mindful of Charissa the crippled, but grateful.

    Bless you…always,
    Charissa

    1. I hardly know what to say. This is the sweetest comment I’ve ever had.

I’m sorry that you’ve been hurt by others who claim to be Christians. It hurts me to think of it and I know it hurts Christ. He never drove the suffering or needy away from himself. Believe it or not I have been hurt by Christians too, some even in my own church leadership, but I always flee to Christ as my balm. I believe in Christ above all and what his word teaches and his own personal example of love. Remember him in your struggles, remember David who was a man after his own heart. Seek him, love him, first and foremost and the rest will follow.

I think your art is beautiful. Beautiful art comes from the heart. Beautiful art comes from brokenness. Don’t stop. Remember that even the things that you think are “drivel” can touch someone. I found “Shrieking” particularly moving since I had, just moments before, been suffering so badly myself that I was.

I cannot express how glad I am I encouraged you. I cannot express how timely your comment was. I have been just as moved by your comment here, as you were by my visits to your site.

      Bless you. ❤

  5. I love the part about the T-Rex Bible teacher–hilarious, and sad too, if he/she was unable to present the Bible more positively. It wasn’t till 4 yrs ago that it came ALIVE to me. God bless you abundantly.

    1. Yes he wasn’t the best teacher in general. But there are many teachers out there who can bring the Bible to life. In my spiritual walk, I found that it was more God himself that made the Bible come to life for me when I spend time one on one with Him. Thank you for stopping by. Blessings to you too.

  6. Glad you like my haiku. Unlike some writers and pundits, I do not think a person has to be driven to write daily to be classified as a writer. I do not even care whether people call me that despite the fact I am a published author. Keep it up.

  8. Hi Rachel, I’m glad you took the time to read and comment on The Promise, it’s always encouraging to hear from others who share a similar passion for writing. What’s funny is I never intended upon sharing that poem which was inspired by my own childhood and I wrote after watching my firstborn sleeping years ago. It’s funny when you consider something that was initially meant to be a therapeutic way of me coping with the circumstances of my own life could be shared with others and help inspire, warn of just make people think, that’s really what I have come to enjoy about writing poetry today. I’m glad to have come across your blog, people like you make me feel a little less silly about the notion that just by sharing a few words you could actually share a smile, a few tears or just make people appreciate life a little more, keep sharing.

It’s so nice to have people out there are both great at their work themselves and so generous with their words of encouragement for others. You have a great sense of humour, and I hope to read more of your work, and your book(!) soon ❤

  11. Hi Rachel

Thank you for dropping by my blog and taking time to comment on “Rejoice Always -A Christian Rap Psalm.”

Thanks for that touching comment. I wrote this piece almost a year ago. I would be interested to learn how you came across it.

Your writing possesses soul. It comes from the heart of one who has experienced and seen much suffering to write with such depth and power.

Keep true to your message and the Lord will bring His rewards in His time.

Oh, and watch out for those turkeys. My grandmother had one that was fresh from a farm. She put the turkey on the kitchen table to get ready to take off its feathers. She was making preparations to cook it. The next moment when she turned around to go to the kitchen table she saw the turkey moving. She screamed out to her husband, “Sandy, come quick! The turkey is still alive!”

It wasn’t alive. The last remaining nerve endings caused the turkey to appear like it was alive.

    Appearances can be deceiving:)

God bless you, your family and writing ministry.

  13. Rachel, you are blessed with a genuine gift…those are blessings from God. What flows from your heart and spirit is very inspiring, and flows from the deep well He placed within you…sharing with others is one of the most beautiful things one can do…the best thing is that you will blossom more and more because of your kind and selfless heart and spirit You will find that many can relate to what you share, and not all at the same time…you are moved to write by a higher power…to make others lives more refreshing and enjoyable. You have a great flow, easy to embrace…I feel blessed to read your writings…God bless my sister!

  14. For however much time has passed since I was made aware of you through the excellent comment left on my ‘Rationale’ page I have, in between times of congratulating myself for all manner of amazing accomplishments, looked in here at what you have on offer, and, after reading in a thoughtful and careful way (perusing, I believe would be the proper term) I have thought to myself, “I must follow this person”, and then, as I do not deny happens frequently, I become caught up in some imagined drama or another causing me to fail to click upon the above place required for me to automatically receive updates from you (if you know what I mean). Now, before I make my way out onto the porch in order to investigate a disturbance (possibly a fight between two cats (Darth Cheetoh and Lucky Carmen) who make a habit of hanging about here, and after seeing two of your latest entries, one being about my good friend Mr. Dickens (I have made a wonderful study of the occurrence of circumstances in The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club) and ‘The Ol’ Sea Salt’ which includes a photograph I assumed was of the author, but did not realize was in costume that caused me no small amount of fright at the thought of someone, in this day and age, being fitted with a hook in place of where once they had a hand. Anyway, I have lost complete track of where I was going with this (because of the aforementioned disturbance),and so, without further delay, I will be following you, if, that is, you do not mind.

    1. I do not at all mind if you follow me. I am rather honored that The President whose works I so greatly admire, as well as find enlightening and enlivening, deems me worthy of such attention. I must express my personal apologies to you, or anyone else for that matter, who experienced any sort of unpleasantness at the photograph of myself which you mentioned in your extremely eloquent comment above. It was not, I believe this is how people express this, of my “best side”. On a side note, I hope all turned out well with the disturbance on your front porch.

  15. I want to thank you for dropping by my blog site: kauaiartist.wordpress.com. You made my day. I am busy as a local artist here on Kauai, Hawaii, and so I don’t get to spend a lot of time on the computer these days. I am not complaining, mind you. I love that in my September years I get to be an artist and not punch a clock. But what that means is I don’t get to spend my time chatting as I used to.

So, thank you again for coming by and please, drop by often. I write poems very often on a myriad of subjects. I also thank you for sharing them as many of you have said you are doing. I want the words to get out there. One never knows who they are helping, do they?
