Sonnets for Advent: Tuesday week 1

Based on Mark 13:33-37

My servant, keep your guard up. Stay awake!
You do not know the hour of My return.
I’ve left you here to act as my ambas-
sador. Salt and light. You’re My hands and feet.
Don’t let the heat of trial and persecu-
lion turn you off your watch. Don’t let the cool
and safe calm of the night lull you to sleep.
I’ve called you to a post of eternal
import, heaven and hell hang in the bal-
ance. Do not shirk your holy calling to
stand in the gap and call out my message
to those who should be safe inside my walls.
I charge you servant, soldier, stay awake!
Don’t let me find you sleeping at my gate.
